Bar Florio. Cagliari, Italy. June 16, 2015.

Last minute concert at the Bar Florio in Cagliari, at the southern tip of Sardinia. Concert was outdoors in the plaza in front of the bar. Gorgeous public space. Toddlers running around. Older kids on skateboards. Elderly people chatting away at their tables. Young adults focused on the music.

Cagliari on a summer night is special. The ancient part of the city with stone streets and no cars is quite large. So simple to make a city more livable: make the cars go away!

Noci, Italy. May 27, 2015.

Noci. Lovely time. Concert in a very old convent with Giuseppe TriaGianni ConsoleDonato Console, and Wetfootwolt Hold Off, the latter playing, among other instruments, a tuned and amplified broom. Such charming hosts, drove me all around the region to see the sights, and overwhelmed me with food and wine. Special thanks to Fabrizio the chef who treated our entire party to an incredible feast after the show. And an extra special thanks to Gianni’s wife Antonella, who fed me gnocchi that was perhaps the single most amazing dish I had my entire time in Italy (which is saying a lot)!

Giulanova and Termoli, Italy. May 23 and 25, 2015

After the Strozzi Palace in Florence I went to Giulianova for a small concert organized by Giuseppe Di Berardino, a small-town orthodontist who developed a consuming passion for adventurous music in his sixties. The “concert” was essentially a dinner party for the dentist and his patients. The next day the dentist and I traveled 80 miles by bicycle to Termoli, an even smaller town further south down the Adriatic coast of Italy. There I did another informal concert in the Pecorallegra cafe. I never would have considered eating vegan food in Italy, the home of pecorino cheese. But I am here to tell you that Pecorallegra is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at. Unbelievable. So, the Strozzi Palace in the birthplace of the renaissance to a dinner concert with dentist. Love this tour.

Palacio Strozzi. Florence, Italy. May 21, 2015

Concert in Florence was a real high point. Played in the Palacio Strozzi, an icon of renaissance architecture and the city’s major venue for contemporary art.

The concert was covered on Italian TV news.

Rome, Italy. May 18, 2015

Another nice show, this time in Rome at a club called Dal Verme. This club seems like any other rock dive, with a black storefront, a small industrial looking bar, and then stairs down to the music club in the basement. But then you see that the bar is stocked with all kinds of exotic stuff and the bartender is mixing amazing cocktails. And then you do downstairs and realize the sound system is Meyer! So, yeah, a rock and roll dive, but one that thinks if you are going to spend the evening drinking and listening to music, you should listen through the best speakers, and drink the best drinks. What an obvious idea. How odd this is almost never the case.

Napoli, Italy. May 14, 2015.

Napoli

Fantastic time In Napoli. Concert was at  L’Asilo. Biggest crowd of the tour so far. Great space: vibrant, energetic collective of musicians and artists of all kinds. Napoli seems completely ungentrified, and L’Asilo is quite in keeping with that spirit. The scene and the city in some ways reminds of of New York City in the 1970s. Napoli is an edgy place. Here is a picture of the window over the front door of the building where Giuseppe Aiello, one of the main concert organizers, lives:

Area Sismica. Forli, Italy. April 25, 2015.

Area Sismica

barberMeet Piero Ruscelli. One of the 3 producers of my concert in For, Italy at Area Sismica. The only place I know where a man like Piero, who never went to college or high school and worked as a barber since 13 years old, never left his tiny home town, would run a jazz club and bring me to Italy to play. He has been working in his shop for 35 years. Keeps a cello and a music stand in the corner and plays Bach in between customers. AND my beard is going to look sharp for the show. I LOVE ITALY!

Gionni, Piero the barber, and Ariele Montiare the triumvirate behind Area Sismica, an amazing music club in the countryside of Romania an hour or so from Bologna. Area Sismica is a parallel universe in which all the food is delicious, the drinks are strong, people from rural areas do everything they can to stay where they are from instead of leave as quickly as possible, barbers and factory inspectors and dentists spend their spare time organizing concerts of adventurous music, and concert promoters treat visiting musicians like their best friend. If I could figure out how this parallel universe exists. I would win the Nobel prize in physics.
